The sea-eagles are a group of birds of prey in the genus Haliaeetus in the bird of prey family Accipitridae.
Sea-eagles vary in size, from the Sanford's Fish-eagle averaging 2–2.7 kg to the huge Steller's Sea-eagle weighing up to 9 kg. At up to 6.9 kg, the White-tailed Eagle is the largest eagle in Europe. Bald Eagles can weigh up to 6.3 kg, making them the second largest eagle native to North America. The White-bellied Sea-eagle can weigh up to 3.4 kg.
There are eight living species:
White-bellied Sea-eagle (H. leucogaster)
Sanford's Sea-eagle (H. sanfordi)
African Fish-eagle (H. vocifer)
Madagascar Fish-eagle (H. vociferoides)
Pallas's Fish-eagle (H. leucoryphus)
White-tailed Eagle (H. albicilla)
Bald Eagle (H. leucocephalus)
Steller's Sea-eagle (H. pelagicus)
Three obvious species pairs exist; White-tailed and Bald Eagles, Sanford's and White-bellied Sea-eagle, and the African and Madagascar Fish-eagles. Each of these consists of a white- and a tan-headed species, and the tails are entirely white in all adult Haliaeetus except Sanford's, White-bellied, and Pallas's.
Haliaeetus is possibly one of the oldest genera of living birds. A distal left tarsometatarsus (DPC 1652) recovered from early Oligocene deposits of Fayyum, Euzbakistan (Jebel Qatrani Formation, c.33 mya) is similar in general pattern and some details to that of a modern sea-eagle. The genus was present in the middle Miocene (12-16 mya) with certainty.
Their closest relatives are the fishing-eagles in the genus Ichthyophaga, very similar to the tropical Haliaeetus species. The relationships to other genera in the family are less clear; they have long been considered closer to the genus Milvus (kites) than to the true eagles in the genus Aquila on the basis of their morphology and display behaviour, more recent genetic evidence agrees with this, but points to them being related to the genus Buteo (buzzards) as well, a relationship not previously thought close.
The origin of the sea-eagles and fishing-eagles is probably in the general area of the Bay of Bengal. During the Eocene/Oligocene, as the Indian subcontinent slowly collided with Eurasia, this was a vast expanse of fairly shallow ocean; the initial sea-eagle divergence seems to have resulted in the four tropical (and Southern Hemisphere subtropical) species found around the Indian Ocean today. The Central Asian Pallas's Sea-eagle's relationships to the other taxa is more obscure; it seems closer to the three Holarctic species which evolved later and may be an early offshoot of this northward expansion; it does not have the hefty yellow bill of the northern forms, retaining a smaller darker beak like the tropical species.
The rate of molecular evolution in Haliaeetus is fairly slow, as is to be expected in long-lived birds which take years to successfully reproduce. In the mtDNA cytochrome b gene, a mutation rate of 0.5-0.7% per million years (if assuming an Early Miocene divergence) or maybe as little as 0.25-0.3% per million years (for a Late Eocene divergence) has been shown.
A 2005 molecular study showed the genus is paraphyletic and subsumes Ichthyophaga; the species diverging into a temperate and tropical group.
Which species do you think this beast is? Bird species are best identified by their faeces. And on that note.....

The AH-64 is armed with a 30mm M230 chain gun and carries a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rockets on four hard points mounted on its stub-wing pylons.
The Hughes M230 Chain Gun is a 30mm, single-barrel automatic cannon developed by Hughes (McDonnell Douglas) (Boeing) and now manufactured by Alliant Techsystems. It is an electrically operated chain gun, a weapon that uses external power instead of recoil to load its rounds.
Part of the Area Weapon System on the AH-64A Apache attack helicopter, the M230 is mounted in the lower section of the chin gun turret. It uses a three-horsepower electric motor to load 30mm linkless ammunition at a rate of 625 ± 25 shots per minute. The gun has a positive cook-off safety (open bolt clearing) and double ram prevention.
A chain gun is a type of machine gun or automatic cannon that uses an external source of power, rather than diverting energy from the cartridge, to cycle the weapon, and does so via a continuous loop of chain similar to that used on a motor or bicycle. "Chain gun" is a registered trademark of Alliant Techsystems Inc.[1] for a chain-powered weapon.
The primary advantages of chain-driven weapons over their recoil-actuated counterparts are their reliability and controllability.
Rather than being dependent upon the inherently uncontrollable detonation of a cartridge to cycle the action a chain gun instead depends on an external motor to produce power. The motor drives the chain, the chain moves in a rectangular loop via four sprockets which tension it, and one link of the chain is in turn connected to the bolt assembly; thus the bolt moves back and forth to load, fire, extract and eject cartridges. As with other externally-powered guns, this provides a degree of reliability. In addition, as with all externally-controlled guns, a misfired round does not stop the weapon—it is simply ejected.
The speed of the motor also controls how fast the weapon fires, and thus provides controllability. During each full cycle of the chain link attached to the bolt assembly, two periods (passage along the "long' sides of the rectangle") control the time taken for the bolt to drive forward and chamber a round and how quickly it extracts it, whilst the other two periods—when the chain moves across the "short" sides of the rectangle, sideways relative to the axis of the barrel—determine for how long the breech remains locked (during firing) and open (allowing extraction and ventilation of fumes et cetera).
Since it is the time taken for the chain to move around a complete loop of the rectangle that controls the rate of fire of the gun, chain guns can theoretically operate at an infinite number of firing rates from single shot to the maximum imposed by the pressure drop rates in the barrel after firing a cartridge, mechanical tolerances, and other lesser factors. In practice, chain guns come with two or three pre-set firing speeds. For example, the 7.62mm NATO version EX-34 was advertised to offer 570 shots per minute, and developmental work was underway for a 1000 shot per minute version.
