Wow, that was fuckin' amazing!
That fat guy filming it with his phone, he deserved to cop that axe through him. A guy just disarmed the maniacal man, and rather than pick up the axe and get it out of harm's way so he won't retrive it, he just stands there filming.
I absolutely deplore people who stand around filming when they should be helping. I wish the maniacal man succeeded at getting to him at the start when he caught him filming - that'd serve him his just desserts.

No seriously, I liked all your points of view. It's hard for me to know whether this dominant-submissive dynamic the mother is entertaining is the way it was 'before' the Dr. Phil intervention, or the new tactic being tried out.
I guess my bias away from the mother is because as a child growing up I needed the listening. My parents already had the disciplining in order.
Afterall, parenting is a RELATIONSHIP. There's no one-size-fits-all. Sometimes you have to listen and realize your child knows more than you thought and you knew less than you thought, othertimes you have to discipline when you recognize the child is overstepping his right to control things that aren't his to control.

Don't get me wrong, when kids are out of line you have to stamp down the foot. But one problem many people have in parenting is that they don't LISTEN to their children. If you don't recognize the child's emotional needs, and just think that giving orders will make the problem go away, the child will grow up with deep hostility.
I don't know their situation here, but from superficial and brief viewing, it seems to me that the mother has been neglecting certain legitimate emotional and intellectual needs.
Treating kids like obedience robots may 'appear' harmless, and some may think it's right, but it's neither hramless nor right. You tell them what to do, but acknowledge when they are giving clear signals that something you're doing isn't working with their growth as a person.
I feel sorry for the mother. She's obviously not doing it deliberately. She honestly just doesn't know what to do. I hope DR. Phil told her that she does need to listen too, and not just give orders - but I'd doubt it, because pop psychology (especially in the USA) seems to be oevrly authoritarian and denounces the child's rights to play a role in his own healthy upbringing.
