Extremely old. Also from what I understand this cop and guy was from a small town. In the town "supposedly" the cop was constantly harassing this guy. Every report he made about the guy harassing him was ignored. Also the chase happened because he asked for another cop instead of this guy.
So frankly the cop didn't have just one chance to avoid dieing but multiple chances. All of them he gave up so frankly just because of this he deserved to die for being so cocky.
