I have researched your hypothesis and you are correct. Here are the results for the shirtless fighter, in W-L-D-NC (no contest).
On NT: 5-2-0-1
On Putfiles: 6-1-0-2
On PSfights: 40-17-3-13
So this is strongly confirmed, and not weird at all. There could be two possible explanations. It could be indicative, meaning the one who already is or has the confidence that he is the better fighter takes his shirt off, or dispositive, meaning that the act of taking the shirt off, on some level, probably the psychological level, causes that one to fight better. Personally, I think it's indicative.

Great Fight Between Two Dudes on a Basketball Court
It's not fair to describe them as "feeling each other up." For 3 of the 4 minutes, they were standing face-to-face, landing hard punches. True, they showed little skill in placing them and even less in dodging them, but they stood and threw. As the "promoter" pointed out, they forgot they could also use feet, elbows and clinch. It only went to ground late in the fight. It's clear their purpose was to beat each other up, within their rules which evidently included "no choking."

After School Fight Consists of a One Sided Beatdown
Removing the shirt is an act of total commitment of one's whole person to the fight and defiance of the opponent. One may gain advantage in the psych-out from flexing in front of the opponent before the action starts. It also provides complete freedom of movement. Note the fights on here in which one removes the shirt and the other doesn't. The shirtless one wins 90% of the time.
