Even the native americans didn't start out in America, mind you. Science says that human life as we know it started in the middle east close to Africa, and from there humans went to Europe, Asia, Australia, and America. The native americans are simply the ones that got here first.
My logic is since it's all so complicated you belong to the country you're born in no matter where your ancestors came from, yeah honor their traditions and love your roots but in the end you're from the USA, exposed to USA culture and have been raised a USA person. "American" to me is supid and lacks imagination; "let's call ourselves after the entire continent!" I believe you should call yourself after the state you were born in, a texan, kentuckian, californian etc.
