sorry for quoting you at length, but you raise a very relevant question, some of which i will TRY to answer.
many african-americans began to turn to islam (1930's and 1940's) in prison as a way of finding solace and redemption. the devout converts spread this religion to their communities. there are muslims in prison (ignorant ones) that dont even realize that islam began in the middle east. they think its just a "black thing". however, there are more intelligent than not, so i am not bashing anyone. most of the black(american) muslims i know (including family members) are devout and respectable. while many converted in prison, some (like this girl in the video, i assume) were born into and accept islam, so it is not just a "prison" thing.
i cant answer anything about the amount of african slaves taken by muslims. that is a fascinating fact and relevant. personally, i live in the present and learn from the past. however, i cant speak for anyone else.
