Don't get me wrong, when kids are out of line you have to stamp down the foot. But one problem many people have in parenting is that they don't LISTEN to their children. If you don't recognize the child's emotional needs, and just think that giving orders will make the problem go away, the child will grow up with deep hostility.
I don't know their situation here, but from superficial and brief viewing, it seems to me that the mother has been neglecting certain legitimate emotional and intellectual needs.
Treating kids like obedience robots may 'appear' harmless, and some may think it's right, but it's neither hramless nor right. You tell them what to do, but acknowledge when they are giving clear signals that something you're doing isn't working with their growth as a person.
I feel sorry for the mother. She's obviously not doing it deliberately. She honestly just doesn't know what to do. I hope DR. Phil told her that she does need to listen too, and not just give orders - but I'd doubt it, because pop psychology (especially in the USA) seems to be oevrly authoritarian and denounces the child's rights to play a role in his own healthy upbringing.

I think she's been doing too much listening. Did you notice that almost every time he yelled over the top of her, she stopped what she was saying? By giving him the dominant role in their interactions she was reinforcing his bad behavior as well as removing herself from any position of authority. While it is important that he be able to express his feelings, he needs to learn to do so as a child speaking to his parent, not an emotional bully controlling those around him.

I have to say, this is one of the biggest pitfalls of western society, because if any of you actually did that, you'd have your kid taken away and thrown in the system, and you'd be lucky not to get jail for it (and if you're already a parent you know how devastating the idea of having your kid taken actually is). My 15 year old niece ran away with a known drug dealer in his 20's. There was NOTHING my sister could do about it, after pleading with authorities from all angles. This is just one of the reasons I have mentioned to few of you that I would rather my 5-year-old son be raised where he is; in the middle east. Parents have rights there, demand and GET respected. Here, the children have the rights and parents have to sit back and be ruled by puberty.

Sometimes you have to listen and realize your child knows more than you thought and you knew less than you thought, othertimes you have to discipline when you recognize the child is overstepping his right to control things that aren't his to control.
