People think that New Jersey = Newark/Jersey City, and people think that Newark = New Jersey.
These people are beyond brainwashed by billions of people who say that they have dealt with nothing but stuck-ups from Jersey. There are 300,000 people in Newark, another 250,000 people in Jersey City, and another million or so living along the NYC line. There are several million pissed off commuters going back and forth between (these areas in) New Jersey and NYC getting regularly stuck in traffic jams and getting sick with sore throats and carbon dioxide up their nasals regularly. The pollution by the Colgate factory in Jersey City is responsible for giving nearby residents cancer and various other problems. (And you wonder why the Tourettes guy hated Colgate.) I can't imagine anyone in that whole damn area feeling happy about paying $1 million for their homes; right now, Bayonne is their only semi-decent shelter from it all in that area.

If people would get their mind out of the gutter about associating these places with New Jersey and focus more on... Sussex County! Being near to the Poconos and perhaps southern Pennsylvania (not directly near Philadelphia). Hell, go 30 southmiles west of Newark to a developmental site called Bordentown if places like western Bergen County are out of reach. Oh, and Route 17 sucks, because the speed limit is 45 mph, and people are stuck in so much traffic all hours of every day that you might be able to do 25 if you're lucky.
I'm not saying that NJ isn't expensive, but people gotta do some searching.
