Only an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about would call this "counter-terrorism equipment", or make it sound like a 900-yard shot is simply a matter of having the right equipment.
That's an incredibly difficult shot. There are many factors which go into a long range shot. Not only the flight characteristics of the bullet you are using, and and ballistics of the particular load (bullet drop and so forth), but wind speed and direction, even temperature and humidity have an effect on accuracy.
You do understand don't you, that at an extreme range of 900 yards, the smallest deviation can be HUGE? Because as the range increases, so do the you miss your point-of-aim by only, say, 3 inches, which is no problem, it's still a deadly hit. But at 900 yards, the same error would mean you miss your point of aim by as much as 2 and 1/2 feet. Which means you completely miss the animal.
Deer are about the size of a very large dog, which is not all that big to be trying to put down with one shot from HALF A MILE AWAY. This is an almost unheard-of range for deer. But then only PETA-ers and 8th-graders whose only experience with shooting is paintball would be the only ones to think there is something easy or unfair about an extreme-range hit like that. I doubt there's a single commenter who has sneered at this shot who could make a shot even from 100 yards - or 9 times closer than these guys. Go try what they've done and then come talk about how many similar hits you made...which would be "zero".
