I think his biggest problem was the hole in his neck. Cover that and I think he could have continued breathing, the way he was lolling around suggests to me his brain was slowly being starved if oxygen but hey, hes dead now.

Im thinking more along the lines that his neck injury may actually have been a spinal injury as well and he was loosing his ability to breath. He also appeared to have a chest wound so he may have taken one to the heart.
