It's probably some kind of code. The dude had to show up but chose to take his beating instead of fight. Note the crowd and camera were ready.

He musta screwed the other guys girl friend and new he had it coming to him. Cant fight if you have no reason. Adrenaline just isnt there. If you know what I mean.
