He doesn't need to be familiar with the laws to realize that there's a consequence to anything. At least not formally... You don't need a text book and by the look of it you'd think he'd have had some real life experience of it in effect. But then again, maybe he really thought he was going to strike through it. Reality's a bitch sometimes, you don't have superpowers, and that's what happens when you try to defy physics, it doesn't work and you get mangled.
