There's a difference between toughening up and injuring. Stupid ass- they should revolt and beat those leaders until they can't walk again- THAT will toughen THEM up. I hate shit like this. And I am very much in favor of a strong military. So don't label me as a tree-hugging wuss.

It's military hazing at best. Things like that is done in many countries around the world. U.S. band such hazing many years back and look what happend. Got bunch of homos everywhere now. Have friend in S. Korea who was in special force. Got hazing just like the one you saw. Ask him how it felt, and he said at first it was scary, made him angry, made him cry little. But he said after while it just became nusance and didn't felt a thing, but just wanted who ever was doing hazing to just get over with so he can go about his daily routine. Just became numb to hazing after while.
Wouldn't it be more beneficial to have the soldiers practicing hand to hand combat against eachother so they take a beating while learning how to give one as well? I don't really see how standing there letting your officer smack you around is going to help train you for combat. This certainly seems to be a good way to prevent people from wanting to join the military.

@video: Its called body hardening, hazing is pointless. This is not. Go through a few weeks of this shit, and see how much it takes for someone to really hurt you in hand to hand combat. The Russians are just sloppy with everything, this (body hardening) still happens in the US, it is just done differently and not at this extreme...

Good comments on the military purpose this serves. I watched the video before reading the comments, as usual, and I could see that these men in training were expecting this. They line up and didn't look the least bit shocked about what they were seconds away from each receiving. Yeah, it looks like it hearkens back to Jean-Claude Van Damme days, what with the shirtless muscly macho man, and it looks, as someone else said, somewhat sloppily executed, but I imagine they're preparing for less-than-ideal circumstances where encountering this sort of thing is likely.
@ ummm yeah... Obviously if they were training fighters against eachother there would be instruction from someone that knows what they're doing. It;s really not that hard of a concept to grasp and it is just like any profesional fighter, when training they spar against other fighters and such, they don't stand there and let their coach punch them around. They are still recieving instruction while they spar an opponent. They WOULD be learning from an expert. What are they learning by getting slapped around? Did you even think about what you were writing? Just to make sure I get you right, you are saying that getting slapped around will make them better fighters because they are learning how to slap around the enemy or something? Really, I don't get your logic.
Yeah, I'd rather a tough military that had good training to protect me, but I don't get how this makes them any better soldiers.

@crederer: Did YOU think about what you were writing? If you are constantly kicked, punched and kneed all over, focusing on the pressure points and nerves, for weeks on end, at the conclusion of that period, you will be one hard motherfucker. One that would not go down easy in a fight. It wont make them better at fighting, but it will make them better in a fight. There is a method to the madness, the Russians are just sloppy with their training.
Now thats training for you, they seem worst than the French Foreign Legion. If you can't take that shit you can just leave, run off to wherever, and i got to say i do know nothing.
I also think I've seen this video several different times from several different website in my past two different lives.

To ones who asked: Yes, it is a kind of "initiation" for young Russian Army's GIs. Rather sick practice (to my mind), but they say it helps when it comes to real battle (i.e. with Chechens). Noone is able to learnt fighting from Chuch Norris's movies, books or video courses.
To ones who says it's only in Russia: nope, there were the same videos about US GIs initiation (about a year ago), find them if you wanna see.

I agree with einy, anyways soldiers need to be de-humanised, a normal man/women don't normaly pick up a ak 47 are a m16 and start shooting the crap out of things, soldiers need to be tough for combat, that kind of sensless brutality as some have put it is very uslful in keeping the Ground Infentrys mouths shut if they get captured, you can't torture a man/women if he/she has already been broken, these are the tools essential for good soldiering. you can't measure a soldiers essence by his/her means to aim a gun with accuracy and kill a target, a soldier has to learn all sides to it, the good and the bad, if a soldier is just a man/women with a rifle and sweet aim, he/she aint no soldier at all, he/she is just a kid thats been to the shooting range alot. if he/she has been given disaplin and toughened up, he/she has the tools to deal with any situation. im not gonna mention all the middle bits like, urban warfare and the like would take way to long.

It's called deduvdshina or something and it s basically that older guy whos trainig is almost over are beating up the new recruits. New ones are too scared to too anything cause if one moves and the others dont then they beat him half dead. It.s not a part of official training and after those videos were released then the russians initiated a investigation but i dont know the solution. But its common fact that several youn men who are forced to army commit a suicide cause of the deduvdshina. In russia the recruits are not volunteers every man between 18- and 28 or smth must serve in army for 2 years.

Uhm this part of the army had a name i forget. My dad told me about it. New recruits are beaten on their first day and any time they disobey their higher ranks. Then when they are higher rank they get to beat the shit out of the new recruits. It's tradition i suppose. It's meant to harden you up and make sure you don't mouth off to superiors.
