Taking the lion out of where it belongs (in the wild) was a stupid mistake humans make, they should live with the consequences of dealing with such a dangerous beast. all in all human life > animal life. for all of you who feel that they shouldnt have shot the lion think about it this way:

a)Scream for help, and shoot the animal to help out someone you love?

madcapn said it right too. The spacing on the cage was wide enough that maybe the lion snagged the guy when he walked too close. Lions are pretty strong if he caught the guys leg he would be able to drag him in ala draging the guy away from the bars to stop the rescuers from pulling him out.

Here's what really happened. They were filming a Gladiator II fight scene and Russell Crowe's spear accidentally poked the lion drawing a little blood. This infuriated the poor lion since it was supposed to be a non-contact day. Russell Crowe's enormous ego caused the lion to slip into a fit of rage and he couldn't control himself and began chewing on Russell's neck...end of story.

For those of you that dont know, animals in circus get treated badly, specially in that kind of third world circus.

This lion is almost literally biting the hand that feeds him. Probably acting on it's long-supressed animal instinct. For all any of you know a trainer going in a cage could have been a quite regular thing, there are trained lions and tigers in the circus. So thish could have been a routine train session and the lion went berserk, for all any of you know. Quit bashing the victim.

Well, people feel quite strongly about this, don't they? I don't. My reaction was this: "Oh well." I was actually expecting to see something a bit more "graphic," (like this video [link] which I will never ever ever ever be able forget, no matter how hard I try) although I myself have been somewhat desensitized to violent aftermath... if I ever saw it in real life, I would freak out. I mean, I would flip, freak out, go berserk, and not know what to do at all.
Let us go through some facts, even though they are carrying almost no weight with you guys.
1. You don't know the circumstances of this event. Are you sure that the injured man had malicious intent? You are quick to say "FUCK HIM, HE DESERVED TO DIE," and yet you have no clue who he is, or why he is even there. You do not know if he was attempting to free the lion, at which point you would probably praise him for his bravery, such is your two-faced hypocrisy. Was the man an innocent bystander who walked by and happened to be caught in such a situation from the forceful maws of the feline? Was he trying to save the dog that had wandered into the lion's cage? Did he, at the last moment and off-camera, rescue a toddler from the lion's dwelling? What is your response, then? "The man is a hero, because he sacrificed his life to save the child!" I would warrant against thinking that if such were the case that the man was entirely willing to throw his life away in such circumstances. In a dark cave of bears, I could see no other solution. In a controlled, captive environment, the "danger" is obviously severely lessened. (Lesson taken from this video [link])
2. You don't know the history of that particular animal. Animals are not immune to psychosis. This animal could very well have been trained (yes, animals can be trained) to distinguish edible meat from non-edible caretakers. This animal could have been treated very well and suffered, instead, from unforeseen neural complications. Or perhaps it suffered from undetected dietary problems.
3. You don't know how or why the man appears in the mouth of the lion. Was it self-defense? On whose part? The man's, and he was overtaken, or the lion's, and he prevailed? Was this even a matter of malice? Almost all of you, by participating in this lunatic debate, have made fools of yourselves by assuming that you know that either the man was at fault and deserved to die (which you say often of people in the videos on this site, being safe and out of harm's way yourselves).
The irony here is that so often you call for the deaths, rapings, severe beatings, disembowelments, etc, of your own kind, yet demand in every instance that those not your own kind be treated in the most humane, most respectable, most dignified way possible, and decry every instance where this is violated. Where is your capacity for mercy? I should think most sane people would rather those of you who believe such live among the animals whom you revere and away from your own species whose death and torture you are more than pleased to advocate.
4. You don't know that every instance where animal and human clash in violence is the fault of human. The atheistic evolutionists among you would be more consistent to leave all morality out of your arguments on this issue--in this case, humans have evolved and made up for their lack of natural offense and defense by crafting effective weapons to replace the need for fear of their own lives, and animals have merely received the short end of the stick, not being fit enough any longer to survive through their natural means--although I haven't studied such a position, being myself convinced that, as a Christian, animals are fit for use but are to be respected. To demonstrate the wide-acceptance of animal use, I don't see animal-loving (almost -worshipping) liberals denouncing all use of horses, and yet they are one of the most widely-utilized and useful animals on the planet, regarding human labor. They are fast, strong, and loyal. They have been used for farming, for transportation, for participation in sports, and for glue. (That last one is facetious in tone.) All things considered, it is in our best interest to treat animals with respect and understanding, and we have been doing so for thousands of years. Yet there will always be those who think that every time something like this happens [link], humankind must be faulted and blamed and even harmed and charged with some higher moral offense (oftentimes themselves adhering to no such belief, while demanding others be judged by it)--even though the people unfortunate to be caught unawares by animals happen to be experts and lifelong advocates of humane animal treatment (Jeff Corwin, from the video, is one; and I spit upon any people who rejoiced at the death of Steve Irwin, whose conservation and faunal education efforts were among the more noble achievements of mankind).
5. You don't know.
That's all I'm really trying to say. There are a million different circumstances that could have caused this event, none of which you know. Siegfried & Roy might be the most well-known large feline trainers and entertainers in the world, and yet how could you at all deny that they treat those cats with the utmost respect? Lets go over the PROBABLE reason for the guy being in the cage. He was probably a trainer or a keeper, possibly a zoologist (even though this looked more like a circus/show type setting ..) Either way, he was probably not very successful and just needed the job to help keep food on the table for his family. He is only doing what his job was, should he die for that? The lion was only following its instincts, but the only way to prevent the guy from dying was that gun. Had they had tranquilizers i'm sure they would have used those first, but they didn't.
As much as i believe in rights for all animals, not just humans, lets think outside the box. That lion was locked up in a small cage ... all you people saying "OH NO, THE LION SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN KILLED U FUCKS!!" ... shouldn't you be happier that the lion is no longer suffering in captivity? Now it is truly free from its suffering. This is probably what it wanted rather than "living" in that cage.
Also, its more than likely that had the guy NOT survived that magnitude of an attack with blood everywhere and everything, the lion would have been euthanized (is that the term?) after the attack anyway, as it would be considered a threat.
So lets be glad at least one of them came out alive ... shall we?
