The wild horse race involves much mayhem, but usually isn't hard on the animals. This was a real freak accident. Horses typically won't run headlong into one-another like that.
Keep in-mind that horses out in the pasture often exchange blows that would kill men while just playing, and sometimes lose their footing and go ass-over-teakettle during a recreational gallop. They aren't delicate little housepets.
